Experiencing Chicken Pox

A parent called me today because her child was absent from my class because of chicken pox. After the class, one parent approached me and told me about his son’s condition. He had blisters on his arms as well as his forehead and I suspect it was also chicken pox. I told her mom to let her child rest at home first so that the virus won’t spread to other students.

Chicken pox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is an itchy rash of spots that look like blisters and it can appear all over the body. A person who has chicken pox will experience a flu-like symptom and is required to stay at home and rest because this infection is very contagious.

Two years ago, one of my students also has chicken pox. I was having a class in the morning and later in the afternoon, I felt like I was having flu. My ears were so painful so I went to the doctor for a check-up. The doctor told me that my ears were okay so I went home and decided to sleep. I slept like a baby that I woke up at 7 o’clock in the evening. I was having fever and my body was painful. When I check on my legs, I saw small blisters. Until I noticed another small blisters kept coming out from my arms. I had chicken pox.

I was absent from work for 2 weeks. I stayed home and rested. My face looked horrible because of the blisters. Most of my friends who had chicken pox told me that the blister are very itchy especially when they are starting to dry up. However, I tried to use warm baths and oatmeal baths and it helped me with the itching problems. Actually, the itching was never a problem because I also used a cream to cool down the blisters.

Having chicken pox was never easy. You can’t talk to people because they might be contaminated. You can’t go out and have fun because the virus is contagious. You can’t do what you want because your body is very weak.

Anyway, if you want to get rid of the terrible experience of having chicken pox, getting a chicken pox vaccine will surely minimize your symptoms. Taking also Acyclovir would surely help but you will have to check with your doctor for the right dosage for it to be effective.

Yummy Sunday #1: Steamed Fish

This is my grandsmother’s plate when we had dinner at Sentro 1850. She prefers to have a low fat and low calorie meal, she chose this steamed fish meal with different kinds of dips.

I am not a fan of steamed fish but when I learned about its benefits I feel the need to like it because it has a lot of benefits for our health. Aside from being a low fat and low calorie meal, fish are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. These acids help control cholesterol levels as well as prevent heart attack and stroke. Steaming the fish can keep the acids in compared to high heat cooking methods. If you are on a diet, eating steam fish helps you maintain a good source of low calorie protein in the body.

Is it an Eye Problem?

My husband experienced some redness in his left eye yesterday. It was painful that sometimes it can cause headache. He was bothered about it so he went to see an eye doctor for his eye problem.  The doctor told him that is was Scleritis, an inflammation of the sclera of the white outer wall of the eye.

Most of the symptoms of having an inflamed sclera is a blurred vision, eye pain, red patches on the white part of the eye, sensitivity to light and tearing of the eye. In my husband’s experience, he had red patches on the white part of the eye and eye pain.

The doctor gave him a corticosteroid eye drops and thank God, his eyes are okay now. Although there are still small red patches on his eye but there is no more pain. I hope that by the tomorrow, the redness will be gone.

 

Need to be Physically Fit

Hubby got a call from his previous employer about a work opportunity probably next year. He was a bit excited but at the same time had second thoughts because he was thinking about his health. If he will be back for work, he will have to experience waking up very early in the morning, staying long hours under the heat of the sun and many other stressful situation. With all these thoughts in his mind, he planned to prepare himself for the work next year… that begins with a physically fit body.

A Painful Menstrual Period

My menstrual period started today. This time, I’m having a painful menstrual period or what is commonly known as dysmenorrhoea.  I’m currently experiencing pain in my lower abdomen and at my lower back.  The pain just comes and goes so I decided not to go to work and just stayed at home and rest.

Whenever this happened, I usually try some home remedies which the doctor told me when I was in college. You too can apply it too. Here’s the list:

1. Apply a heating pad on your lower belly area. Since, I don’t have a heating pad at home, I use a bottle and placed it with hot water. After that, I cover it with cloth and put the bottle in my lower belly just bellow my belly button.

2. Drinking warm beverages will also help a lot.

3. Keep your legs raised while lying down, or lie on your side with your knees bent.

4. Take warm showers or baths.

5. Walk or exercise regularly, including pelvic rocking exercises.

There are other home remedies that are effective but these are my proven home remedies which I have tried and tested.

If the pain gets overwhelming and I am in the middle of my work, a single Paracetamol will help. The doctor told me I can take pain relievers such as Mefenamic Acid or Advil but sad to say I am allergic to any pain relievers, so I just settle on Paracetamol and it helps though.
