Experiencing a Canker Sore

Have you experienced having a canker sore? Painful, right?

I’ve always experience this mouth sore and every time I complain, my mother would say that I have a vitamin C deficiency. So I said to myself that I must lack Vitamin C because I always get a sore. I became curious and have a little search about it on the internet and read some important points on MayoClinic.

Canker sores, also called aphthous ulcers, are small, shallow lesions that develop on the soft tissues in your mouth or at the base of your gums. Unlike cold sores, canker sores don’t occur on the surface of your lips and aren’t contagious. They can be painful, however, and can make eating and talking difficult. Most canker sores go away on their own in a week or two.

Most canker sores are round or oval with a white or yellow center and a red border. They form inside your mouth — on or under your tongue, inside your cheeks or lips, at the base of your gums, or on your soft palate. You might notice a tingling or burning sensation a day or two before the sores actually appear.

There are several types of canker sores, including minor, major and herpetiform sores.

Minor sores are small and oval-shaped, and heals within a week or two leaving without any scarring. While the major sores are larger and deeper which heals up to six weeks and leaves with a scarring. The other one, herpetiform sores, are pinpoint sizes but occur in clusters of 10 to 100 sores and heals up in one or two weeks.

You need to see a doctor if you experience:

  • Large canker sores
  • Recurring and persistent sores
  • Sores to your lips
  • Pain
  • Difficulty in eating and drinking
  • High fever

What are the Causes of Canker Sores?

The main cause of Canker sore is not clear but researchers said that a combination of many factors contribute that a person experience it. Such triggering factors included are:

Spicy or acidic foods
Accidental cheek bite
Brushing
Toothpastes that contain sodium lauryl sulfate
Food sensitivities (chocolate, coffee, strawberries, eggs, nuts, cheese and highly acidic foods, such as pineapple)
Lacking Vitamin B-12, Zinc, Folate or Iron
Emotional stress

Canker sores are common in women. Sometimes, it is because of hereditary or a factor in the environment that you may experience the sore. Remember, if the sore gets painful then it is time to go and see a doctor. If the pain is not that strong, there are some home remedies that you might want to do.

Home Remedies

* Rinse your mouth with salt water and baking soda (dissolve it with 1 tsp. soda in 1/2 cup warm water).
* Apply ice to the canker sore. Let it dissolve.
* Brush your teeth slowly and gently.

To prevent the canker sore to come back, you need to watch out the food that you are going to take. If there are food that you are allergic to, please do avoid them. Choose healthy food. You need to follow good oral hygiene habits like brushing your teeth and flossing regularly.

A Painful Menstrual Period

My menstrual period started today. This time, I’m having a painful menstrual period or what is commonly known as dysmenorrhoea.  I’m currently experiencing pain in my lower abdomen and at my lower back.  The pain just comes and goes so I decided not to go to work and just stayed at home and rest.

Whenever this happened, I usually try some home remedies which the doctor told me when I was in college. You too can apply it too. Here’s the list:

1. Apply a heating pad on your lower belly area. Since, I don’t have a heating pad at home, I use a bottle and placed it with hot water. After that, I cover it with cloth and put the bottle in my lower belly just bellow my belly button.

2. Drinking warm beverages will also help a lot.

3. Keep your legs raised while lying down, or lie on your side with your knees bent.

4. Take warm showers or baths.

5. Walk or exercise regularly, including pelvic rocking exercises.

There are other home remedies that are effective but these are my proven home remedies which I have tried and tested.

If the pain gets overwhelming and I am in the middle of my work, a single Paracetamol will help. The doctor told me I can take pain relievers such as Mefenamic Acid or Advil but sad to say I am allergic to any pain relievers, so I just settle on Paracetamol and it helps though.
